The final guidepost is one that really hits different for me now that I’m a parent. Like Brené, I grew up in a world where being cool and fitting in were highly valued and I am very aware of wanting to cultivate a different reality for my daughter.
In that vein, I loved Brené's story about doing the robot in Nordstrom with her daughter, but I’m not sure I would have had the courage to respond as she did! Uncovering my own authentic self and opening up to moments of vulnerability are things I am constantly working on as an adult, and phew, it’s hard.
What about you? What struck you as you finished the book?
Choose a prompt below and share what resonates with you from this section:
How does it make you feel to consider laughing, singing, or dancing without any control or filter in front of a group of people?
Betrayal was a powerful element of Guidepost #10, “When we value being cool and in control over granting ourselves the freedom to unleash…the full expressions of who we are, we betray ourselves.” How does this make you feel about self-love and self-confidence?
How do you treat others differently than you treat yourself? Why?
Reflecting on the book as a whole, what has stuck with you the most?
What is one DIG deep pattern you’d like to continue based on what you’ve learned about yourself with this reading?
See you in the comments!
